Diamond Willow Fungus refers to the fungi that grows on the sides of willow trees. Typically having white, black or brown colouring, the name doesn’t appear to reference a single type of fungi, with sources referring to Diamond Tree Fungus as coming from the Haploporus Odorus, Valsa Sordida, or Haploporus Adorus family. However, the distinctive shelf-like cap and smell make it easy to identify Diamond Willow Fungus in the wild. The cap is diamond-shaped and has a smell similar to anise. Its odor is usually noticeable before you see the fungus. An Edmonton arborist can help you identify the fungus.
Diamond Willow Fungus is mainly found in northern Alberta and British Columbia in North America, or anywhere north of the 51st parallel. It typically grows on willow trees in damp areas of forests or wooded wetlands. The name doesn't refer to a single tree species, but rather the unique scarring it leaves on the otherwise regular willow trees it affects. These scars resemble the faceted surface of a diamond, and this distinctive feature makes it easily recognizable among other types of fungi.
The wood of an infected tree is rather appealing. The diamond-like legions left in the wood of the tree make it aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and the beautiful wood is sought after for a wide range of decorative uses, everything from diamond willow walking sticks to handmade diamond willow home decor.
This fungus holds deep meaning for Indigenous people, and reverence for fungi is reflected in various spiritual ceremonies and traditional medicinal practices. As such, the fungus is harvested at specific times of the year and with great care. However, the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation has noted that very few clumps of willow trees actually have the fungus. Ensuring the survival of fungi heavily relies on the protection of willow habitats.
But there may come times when trees with Diamond Willow Fungus should be removed. Maybe the tree itself needs to be taken down, or perhaps the Diamond Willow Fungus has spread too extensively and poses a risk to nearby trees or structures. In such cases, careful consideration and consultation with arborists are essential to ensure the proper removal and disposal of the affected tree and fungus.
Diamond Willow Fungus is a type of parasite. Growing several inches wide, it primarily infects willow trees and is known for leaving distinctive diamond-shaped patterns on the wood. The fungus gets its nutrients by absorbing them from the tree's living tissue, ultimately causing harm to the host tree and causing branches to die back. A canker will form where the dead branch was, often creating a concave diamond shape in the wood.
If left untreated, the Diamond Willow Fungus can spread to other healthy branches, weakening the willow tree's overall structure. It is important to promptly identify and address any signs of infection to prevent further damage to the entire tree. The fungus is perennial, and will come back year after year if left untreated.
The tree fungi can spread to surrounding trees and ultimately weaken or kill them, so it's important to monitor and take action when necessary. Maintaining the health of the overall ecosystem is crucial for the longevity of your trees.
Diamond Willow Fungus is a type of canker disease on your tree. A canker is an area of dead or dying tissue on the branches or trunk of a tree, caused by various factors such as fungi, bacteria, or physical injury. Unlike other types of fungal diseases on trees, canker diseases are typically caused by tree stress or trauma, with the cankers generally starting where the injured part of the tree is, leading to discolouration of the bark on branches and stem.
To treat and prevent cankers, the key is employing good pruning techniques. Regular pruning helps to remove any damaged or diseased branches, allowing for better air circulation and reducing the risk of cankers. Removing dead, broken or infected branches will help eliminate the potential for spread, and applying fungicide will help to further protect the tree from cankers. It is important to choose a fungicide that is specifically formulated to treat the type of canker affecting the tree and carefully follow the instructions for application.
Remember, it is important to sterilize pruning tools between cuts to prevent the spread of infection. This can be done by wiping the blades with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol or a dilute bleach solution. It's essential to ensure that the pruning tools are completely dry before using them again to avoid any potential harm to the plants.
Providing proper care and maintenance for your trees, such as fertilizing, watering, and, of course, pruning can also help you prevent the growth of cankers on your trees. Regularly inspecting your trees for signs of cankers and promptly addressing any issues can help maintain tree health and vitality.

Trusty Trees did their magic at my Mothers house in Fort Saskatchewan. Mikex2 we’re on time, organized and knew their business. Gave the trees a good haircut as they had a lot of dead areas. Very pleased with their service, would definitely recommend them! Much thanks Mike and Mike.
We had a crew from Trusty tree services to come and remove 6, 40 foot aspen trees. They did an awesome job. They were very knowledgeable and very considerate of our property and our neighbours property. They had our yard and neighbours yards totally cleaned up when they were finished. I would highly recommend Trusty Tree Services
We had a crew from Trusty Tree Services trim three trees on our property a few weeks ago, sorry for the late review. Couldn't be happier with the whole process. From the estimate to the final clean up, everything went very well. I contacted other companies for estimates, didn't even get a call back. Thanks again Trusty Tree for a great job!
Trusty Tree Services came out and pruned our Amur Cherry tree in Fort Saskatchewan and did a great job. The technicians were knowledgeable and gave me tips on how to better take care of our tree. The technicians were friendly and polite and cleaned up before they left. I would definitely recommend Trusty Tree Service!
Excellent job! I highly recommend this company. I will be calling again this fall! I am very happy.
We had an amazing experience with Trusty Tree. They gave a prompt estimate for some very difficult trees in our campground. They arrived on time and began work immediately. Their expertise shone through as they brought down the trees on point! Friendly, informative, professional and outstanding workmanship. I would recommend them in a heartbeat. Shout out to Colton, Joe and Adrian - great work!
We had Trusty Tree out this year to shape and thin 4 trees and 3 Mugo Pine shrubs. I was impressed with a quick appt for the quote and then quick response for booking. Our trees were pruned earlier in the season as this was the recommended timeframe, and the Mugo Pine shrubs pruned later in the spring after the new growth appeared. I'm pleased with the crew that came out, they were polite, professional and experienced. We are happy with how our trees and shrubs look and feel the price was fair. We would definitely recommend Trusty Tree and will have them back in the future. Thanks for taking extra time with us to talk about proper pruning too!
Very professional and courteous crew. Difficult tree to cut down with bucket truck given clearances.
I am a new widow and my yard work is so overwhelming, I called Trusty tree to come over and give me a quote. Because my husband who has slways been in love with taking great care of our home, has passed I am here to do it alone.Trusty tree are the most professional people I dealt with..And they actually had the most professional quote, they took pictures of my Tree to elaborate on what needed to be done, and explained why everything had to be done in a certain way...after 3 other companies coming out I realized that Trusty Trees quote was extremely fair. So when the Trusty Tree crew arrived to prune my beloved tree, they were ready, and really understood the sentimental value of my tree that my late husband and I used to sit under every night. The crew members Joe and Shane collaborated beautifully brought down the required amount of my tree..They had a fantastic chipper on site and they also cleaned up the yard so beautifully after the cutting was done...If anyone reads this review, please understand how much that tree meant to me and my late husband. Joe and Shane gave it a loving and caring trim, and they where not only hard working but very informative of the process, and very just great guys, they included their sense of humor to make the trimming process easier on me. THEY were so compasionate and understanding . I thank them for that..... If you are thinking of pruning your gorgeous beloved tree, Trusty Tree has got be your only choice. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!! My name is Christine and if anyone wants to contact me about what a great job this crew did..please do!!!

This was the second time I've used this company for mature tree removal. This time 4 fully grown columnar Aspen trees located close to fencing, a deck and between 2 houses were successfully removed with no damage to the aforementioned structures but also nearby concrete curbing. Work was done as scheduled, quickly and neatly. Very satisfied with the work.

When Trevor came to quote my yard at my new house, he helped me identify all the trees and shrubs, and clearly explained what work needed to be done. When the day came to do the work, Kolton and Carl were friendly and also walked me through what they were doing and why (I'm interested in these things and was asking questions). They did their best to save my cherry that is infected with black knot. Looking forward to having them come back to continue tree maintenance in the future.
We had trusty trees! Cut down our tree and put all new grass down in our back yard and it's absolutely beautiful 😊 Also the crew are very friendly and extremely hard workers! Thank again ❣️

We had a tree in our yard that had died a few years earlier and wasn’t sure who to call. We called Sunstar who recommended Trusty Tree to us. Trevor came out to look at our tree. We didn’t realize we had another Tree that was diseased. He sent us a quote very quickly. He was able to book a time for tree removal, stump grinding, as well as planting our new trees. The project was done in the timeline provided. The crews showed up on time or earlier than expected which was amazing! They were very professional. I would hire Trusty Tree again!
