Spring is finally here! Now that third winter is over and done with, we can finally dust off the BBQ and get back to enjoying the outdoors without having to bundle up to stay warm or sludge through that freezing cold white stuff. Of course, after months of harsh cold weather, your yard is looking a little rough, and your trees can use a little TLC. Proper tree care in the spring can help set them up for success in the summer, allowing them to get the most out of this year's growing season.
In order for you to get the most enjoyment from your outdoor space, there are a number of things you need to do to help get your yard up to stuff and improve your outdoor living space. Here are our top spring tree care tips from our Edmonton arborists to help you transform your yard this spring.
Much like your indoor living space, your outdoor living space needs a good clean, especially after the long winter months, where fallen leaves, trash and other debris accumulated under the piles of snow.
Getting rid of any trash and dead plant material that accumulated in your garden since last fall will help you see what survived, and provide you with a fresh canvas to create this year’s garden retreat.
Due to Northern Alberta’s harsh and long winters, chances are something died in your garden over the winter, leaving a hole in your landscape. Spring is an ideal time for planting, so whether you are removing dead trees, replacing dead plants, or have just moved in and want to create your dream garden, it’s important to ensure that everything has its own space.
Trees have large root systems, and need space to grow. Grouping them too closely together can hinder growth and cause competition for resources such as water and nutrients in the soil. Proper spacing of trees is important to support their healthy development and prevent overcrowding. Additionally, planting smaller plants like bushes or flowering shrubs too close to your trees can cause issues such as reduced air flow and sunlight, which can negatively impact the health of both the trees and the smaller plants.
When planting or moving things around, ensure that you are giving everything adequate space to grow. Remember, it may look small now, but it will grow.
Pictures of your yard and garden from the height of the last growing season can help you better map out where things can go and what needs room, or consult with our professional arborists to ensure your trees have enough room to grow.
Chances are, you’re going to want to plant things this spring. Maybe you want to even put in a new tree. Testing your soil provides valuable insights into nutrient levels, leading to improved plant and tree health. You can pick up kits at your local garden centre, or ask our expert arborists how you can get the most out of your soil.
All plants need nutrients, especially trees. Fertilizing your trees in the spring can provide them with essential nutrients to help support healthy growth and development. It's important to select a fertilizer that is specifically formulated for trees and follow the application instructions carefully.
Additionally, it's important to consider the tree's age and species when choosing the right fertilizer, as different trees have different nutrient requirements. Regular fertilization can not only promote healthy leaf and root development but also improve overall resistance to diseases and pests.
With winter over and the ground unfrozen, you’ll need to start regularly watering your plants. As the warmer weather approaches, water is needed to prevent your soil from drying out and keep your plants healthy. Trees are no exception to this rule. They require adequate hydration to thrive during the spring and summer months. Providing enough water will help their roots establish properly and support their growth for the upcoming season.
Ensure you are hitting your trees with enough water during your watering rounds. Or, if you have irrigation, ensure it is functioning properly and providing enough water for your trees. If your trees are not being covered by your irrigation system, talk to your provider about adding them to your system. It will save you a lot of time and effort once the hot weather is here.
Winter weather is harsh, and your yard will often take the brunt of it in your home. Now that spring is here, you’ll need to check out your yard for damage. In addition to dead plants, some things you’ll want to keep an eye out for include:
Our ISA-certified arborists can inspect your trees, and help you come up with a tree care plan, as well as address any issues they may find. Remember, a healthy tree is a happy tree.
Mulch is a protective layer of material that is spread over the surface of the soil to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Placing a layer of mulch around the perimeter of trees and shrubs can help protect them from damage caused by equipment such as lawn mowers, and protect tree roots from extreme temperatures and maintain soil moisture levels, which will be very beneficial this year, considering much of Alberta is expecting to experience drought conditions this year.
Be sure that you leave space around your tree’s trunk to prevent the growth of fungi. Speak to our tree care experts about proper mulch management for your trees.
Regular pruning of branches and twigs from trees can help improve overall tree health. Not only are you getting rid of any dead branches or cumbersome limbs, proper pruning can help prevent the spread of disease and infections, as well as encourage better air circulation and light penetration throughout the tree canopy. This promotes overall tree vigor and reduces the risk of structural damage during storms.
Consult an arborist about the best tree pruning practices for your specific tree species and age, as improper techniques can harm the tree's long-term health. They can also offer guidance on when to prune, as some trees have specific pruning windows to maximize their growth potential and minimize stress.
Sometimes, a tree has just got to go. Whether you are talking about pruning a few branches here and there while doing annual tree maintenance, or getting rid of an entire tree, sometimes you have no choice but to get rid of it. It’s important to consider the best way to remove and dispose of it, because let's face it, a tree isn't likely to fit in your city green bin, and you can't always take it to a composting facility. But your local Edmonton arborist can help you do just that. A professional tree removal services can ensure that the tree is safely and efficiently removed, minimizing the risk of damage to the surrounding area.
But once the tree is gone, what then? What do you do with it?
One popular tree disposal method is chipping. Chipping tree waste involves using a wood chipper to break down branches, leaves, and other organic materials into small, manageable pieces.
Tree chipping refers to the process of turning an entire tree in wood chips, while brush chipping refers to the process of turning yard waste, such as pruned branches, into wood chips. Because these wood chips are used for other purposes, chipping is seen as an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of unwanted tree or plant materials.
While anyone can rent a wood chipper and do it themselves if they have ample space, it is recommended that you seek professional help if you want to chip a tree, especially if it’s not removed yet. Our ISA-certified arborists can remove any unwanted trees from your property, and assist you in safely chipping them using specialized equipment. We prioritize safety and efficiency in our tree removal services to ensure minimal impact on your property and surroundings.
Once the tree or the wood materials is safely removed, then you can start chipping them. After ensuring the pieces are small enough to do so, you can begin feeding them through the equipment. At the end of the process, you should have a big pile of wood chips.
Sometimes, you have too much tree waste to fit into your green bin. While taking it directly to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre or a composting facility is one way to dispose of it, you can also recycle your old tree by turning it into wood chips. There are many things you can do with your new wood chips, with some of the new uses including:
While sending your unwated tree through a wood chipper has a lot of benefits, there are limitations to tree and brush chipping.
Tree or brush chipping is often considered to be an additional service to tree removal. It's important to check with your tree service provider and clarify if tree or brush chipping is included in the removal service or if it's an additional charge. In case you choose to do your own pruning, make sure to organize the branches neatly to avoid any complications during the chipping process and potential extra fees. It is also crucial to understand the requirements for chipping, such as the maximum size and thickness of branches that can be chipped, as well as any specific guidelines provided by your tree service provider. This will help ensure a smooth and efficient chipping process.
Some services may mean that you don't have the option for tree chipping. Stump grinding, for instance, where the tree stump is removed in place, means you may not have the proper material to send through a wood or brush chipper. Some tree trimming services may not leave you with adequate material to send through a wood chipper as well. Make sure you inquire about the tree removal services your Edmonton Arborist provides.
If you are removing dead branches from a diseased tree, or are removing a dying tree or a dead tree that was infected by a disease or fungus, chipping may not be an option for you. Plant diseases and insect infestations can spread from infected plant material, including during travel and processing. Infected plant wood chips can spread disease to other plants and contribute to disease spread in ecosystems. Proper disposal of infected wood chips is crucial to preventing the further spread of plant pathogens. In these cases, our expert arborists will be able to help you dispose of the infected materials safely at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.
Tree or brush chipping is just one of many ways to dispose of your trees or tree waste, and is gaining popularity due to its environmental benefits. Additionally, it is a cost-effective method that allows you to repurpose the chipped materials for various purposes such as mulch, fuel, or ground cover. This process not only minimizes waste but also provides a sustainable alternative for landscaping and gardening needs. Whether you're a homeowner or a professional landscaper, tree or brush chipping can be a valuable and eco-friendly solution for managing your green waste.

In the serene landscapes of Edmonton, a silent threat looms, targeting one of nature's steadfast guardians—the majestic Elms. As urban greenery battles against the unseen adversary, it becomes imperative for locals to grasp the essence of Dutch Elm disease in Edmonton, a menace silently encroaching upon the city's arboreal heritage.
Dutch Elm Disease is a deadly condition that affects all Elm Tree species in Alberta. Caused by a fungus, it clogs the tree’s water conducting system and kills the tree. This disease is spread by 3 different beetle species, which seek out weak adjacent trees to breed. Once matured, the adult beetles fly from tree to tree and spread the fungus.
Read on as we unravel the top 10 hard truths about Dutch Elm disease that demand our attention, prompting reflection on the preservation of these towering sentinels.
Dutch Elm disease, generated by the fungus Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, is a silent marauder, infiltrating the heartwood of Elm trees through the unsuspecting sticky spores and channels of bark beetles and fungal disease. Unseen and often underestimated, this pathogen jeopardizes the very foundation of Edmonton's green canopy.
Watching for early signs and external symptoms of Dutch Elm disease is the first line of defence. From wilted leaves to the characteristic "flagging" of an infected branch, understanding these symptoms can be the key to early intervention and protection.
The threat is not confined to isolated pockets; Dutch Elm disease poses a citywide risk due to its rapid spread. Vigilance is paramount, urging communities to unite in a shared effort to safeguard Edmonton's urban forests from this relentless adversary.
Balancing the need for eradication with the preservation of Edmonton's Elm trees presents a profound dilemma. The city has to strike a harmonious equilibrium between protecting its natural heritage and preventing the disease's relentless spread. In the early stages, preservation of the infected elm tree is possible, but in the later stages, once the beetle has overtaken, leading to dead branches and more, then eradication is necessary as the risk of infection to healthy elm trees is very high.
The fight against Dutch Elm disease is not the sole responsibility of arborists and city officials; every citizen plays a vital role. From reporting suspicious symptoms to adhering to quarantine measures, Edmontonians collectively bear the mantle of preserving their green legacy through public awareness.
Understanding the disease's dynamics equips Edmonton with strategic resilience. Through diversified planting, strict pruning regimes, and fostering tree diversity, the city can fortify its green corridors against the persistent threat.
Beyond ecological implications, Dutch Elm disease exerts a tangible economic toll. The removal and replacement of infected trees, coupled with the potential decline in property values, underline the urgency for a proactive stance against this arboreal menace.
Fostering awareness and education becomes paramount in the battle against Dutch Elm disease. A well-informed public serves as a formidable line of defence, nurturing a culture that cherishes and protects the vital green lungs of the city.
Harnessing the power of innovation and research is crucial in outsmarting Dutch Elm disease. From advanced diagnostic tools to exploring resistant Elm varieties, Edmonton must invest in cutting-edge solutions to stay ahead in this ecological chess game.
The heart of Edmonton beats in the unity of its citizens. Harnessing this collective spirit, fostering community engagement, and instigating a sense of pride in preserving the city's arboreal legacy will be the linchpin in the fight against Dutch Elm disease in Edmonton.
The battle against Dutch Elm disease is not just a struggle for survival between trees and fungus; it is a collective endeavour to safeguard the very essence of Edmonton's identity. As the city stands at the precipice of a green revolution, the time is now to rise, united, against this silent nemesis and secure a vibrant and resilient future for generations to come.
Treating Dutch Elm disease involves a complex decision-making process. While there are some fungicidal treatments available, they are often most effective in the early stages of infection. Once the disease has progressed significantly, especially in mature trees, the chances of successful treatment diminish.
Tree removal becomes a necessary step in cases where the disease has advanced to the extent that treatment is ineffective or the disease has progressed to the point of posing a risk to surrounding elms. Removal is crucial to prevent further spread, as the fungus can be transmitted by bark beetles attracted to infected elms in the area.
Early detection, timely treatment, and professional assessment are essential in determining whether a diseased tree can be saved or if removal is the most prudent course of action. Regular monitoring and swift intervention are key elements in the ongoing battle against this destructive disease. Once the tree has reached the point of needing removal, our experts follow a meticulous approach to the safe removal and preservation of surrounding elm trees. Read on to learn more about our specialized services.
Ensuring safe and effective elm tree removal when infected with Dutch Elm disease involves a systematic process by a professional arborist. The way to execute the safe removal of a Dutch elm tree diseased with infectious fungus and elm bark beetles is:
Professional Assessment:
Engage certified arborists or tree removal experts to assess the extent of the infection and evaluate the tree's overall health. Professional expertise ensures a comprehensive understanding of the situation and informs the decision-making process.
Permitting and Regulations:
Check local regulations as well as obtain any required permits for tree removal. Municipalities often have specific guidelines about the removal of infected elms to prevent further spread of disease.
Quarantine Measures:
Implement quarantine measures to prevent the transportation of infected wood, as this can contribute to the spread of the disease. This involves securely bagging and sealing branches and wood before removal.
Safety Precautions:
Prioritize safety during the removal process. Use proper safety gear, including helmets, goggles, and gloves. Ensure the area is cordoned off to protect bystanders and follow industry best practices for safe tree removal.
Proper Equipment:
Utilize appropriate equipment for the removal, including chainsaws, ropes, and rigging equipment. Having the right tools ensures efficiency and safety during the tree removal process.
Tree Felling or Sectional Removal:
Depending on the size and location of the tree, choose between felling the entire tree or removing it in sections. Professional arborists often use a systematic approach to dismantle the tree safely, especially in urban areas where space is limited.
Disposal:
Dispose of the infected wood carefully to prevent the spread of the deadly disease. Since it is full of disease, it cannot be used as firewood in the summer months. Some municipalities have bylaws that prohibit the movement of firewood and have designated areas or procedures for disposing of trees infected with Dutch Elm disease.
After the tree is removed, consider whether to remove the stump. Stump removal can prevent potential regrowth of the disease or attract native elm bark beetles, minimizing the risk of further infections.
Soil Sterilization:
Consider soil sterilization in the area where the infected elm wood was removed. This additional step can help eliminate any remaining fungal spores in the soil, reducing the risk of future infections.
Replanting and Future Prevention:
After the removal, consider tree planting with disease-resistant healthy trees. Implement preventive measures, such as regular monitoring of nearby trees, to detect and address potential infections early on.
By following these steps, property owners can ensure the safe and effective removal of an Elm tree affected by Dutch Elm disease, contributing to the overall health as well as resilience of the urban forest. When you aren’t sure how to follow some of these processes, or you just want a professional to take care of it, then reach out to your local licensed arborist, and we will ensure the entire process is handled and followed, as well as ensuring local regulations and permits are followed. Let's protect the arboreal giants to stop the spread of Dutch elm disease.

In the local climate, finding native species of flowering shrubs that are renowned for their stunning blooms and adding vibrancy and brilliant colour to any of your landscapes can be challenging. From mass plantings to rock gardens or tall hedges that measure more than 6 feet in height, there are several options to consider. Some of the best shrubs for Edmonton residents that offer a bounty of colourful foliage are:
Common Purple Lilac (Syringa vulgaris): The Common Purple Lilac is a favourite for its exquisite and fragrant light and dark purple blossoms. These clusters of flowers create a captivating sight and fill the air with a delightful aroma. Known for its rapid growth, it’s not only visually stunning but also ideal for quick privacy hedges as well as becoming a butterfly magnet.
Tatarian Honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica): Also called bush honeysuckle, this shrub dazzles with vibrant and fragrant flowers ranging from pink flowers to red-hued blossoms. Its bark is smooth and green, turning greyish-brown with age. Its colourful blooms attract pollinators, making it a visual delight and a boon for the local ecosystem.
Caragana (Caragana arborescens): The Caragana shrub, with its delicate yellow eye-catching flowers, adds a touch of elegance to gardens. While not solely a flowering shrub, its bright blossoms amid its fine green foliage create a charming visual impact.

Choosing the best shrubs for Edmonton homes or businesses involves considering several key factors to ensure their suitability and success in your local climate.
Edmonton's climate can be extreme, with cold winters and fluctuating temperatures. Look for shrubs known for their cold hardiness, such as Siberian Peashrub, Wintergreen Boxwood, or Tatarian Honeysuckle. These shrubs are adapted to withstand Edmonton's harsh conditions.
Consider the space available and the intended purpose of the shrub. If you need a privacy hedge, shrubs like Common Purple Lilac or Dogwood with rapid growth and dense foliage can be suitable. For ornamental features, shrubs like Mock Orange or Caragana offer beautiful flowers or elegant foliage for more sheltered locations.
Assess the level of maintenance you're willing to commit to. Some shrubs, like Common Purple Lilac, may require regular pruning to maintain their shape, while others, like Wintergreen Boxwood, are more low-maintenance and only need annual pruning. Deciding between an informal hedge and a formal hedge helps determine the amount of pruning each plant will need.
Depending on the location and requirements, some shrubs are not moisture tolerant, whereas others are more able to stand excess moisture but not standing water. Picking an option that suits your availability to water or not. Flowering shrubs tend to require more frequent watering, but year-round selections require considerably less.
Understand your soil type and the light conditions of your space. Different shrubs thrive in varying soil types, sunny site exposure, and light shade conditions. For instance, the Canadian Buffaloberry does well in dry conditions, while the Wintergreen Boxwood is versatile in terms of light requirements.
Consider consulting with our local tree specialists in Edmonton. We have expertise in the area's unique conditions and can provide recommendations tailored to your specific needs and the local environment.
With a wide variety of selections, choose the best shrubs for Edmonton that serve multiple purposes, such as providing privacy, attracting wildlife, adding a pop of colour, or offering year-round beauty. For instance, shrubs like Tatarian Honeysuckle serve ornamental purposes and attract pollinators.
By considering the plenty of sizes of backdrop plants, accent plants, or a bush with plenty of flower colour, your options are vast. Research specific shrub characteristics, how winter hardy they are, and how soil adaptable they are will help you make an informed choice on the one that best suits your space. Trees, those silent giants that grace our landscapes with their quiet resilience, require several key elements to maintain their health and vitality. Much like any living organism, all tree species have distinct needs that, when met, ensure their well-being and longevity. From the soil beneath their roots to the canopy that crowns their branches, a myriad of factors contribute to the health of these arboreal wonders.
The essential elements for maintaining tree health can include the following:
Beneath the surface lies the heartbeat of a tree- the soil. It's not just dirt; it's a bustling ecosystem providing vital nutrients and stability. Imagine a pantry filled with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—these are the nutrients a tree craves to grow and flourish. Without them, it's like an artist without colors.
Soil conditions matter; it's the home base for a tree's roots. Compacted or unhealthy soil quality is like a poorly made bed—uncomfortable and hindering a good night's sleep. The right soil temperature and conditions let roots stretch and breathe, allowing them to absorb nutrients and water like a sponge.
Picture a thirsty traveler seeking an oasis in the desert—that's a tree in need of water. Water is its lifeline, aiding in the transport of nutrients and keeping it hydrated. Too much or too little can be the difference between vitality and struggle.
Just like we need a glass of water on a hot day, trees also need regular and deep waterings as well, especially during droughts. Plus, like a cozy blanket, mulching retains moisture and protects the roots, ensuring it's not left parched in the heat.
Trees are the quiet sun-worshippers of nature. They soak in sunlight to create their own food through photosynthesis. Imagine a chef crafting a feast—that's a tree in the presence of sunlight, producing its life-sustaining meals.
When they don’t get enough sun exposure, it’s like an artist working in a dimly lit room—it struggles to showcase its brilliance. Like a supportive audience, pruning in late winter clears the stage and ensures the spotlight reaches every leaf to keep the tree healthy all year.
Picture a vigilant guardian watching over its realm; that's what an arborist does. Regular check-ups identify signs of trouble and diseased branches early. It's akin to a doctor spotting symptoms before they become full-blown illnesses so that you can maintain optimal tree health.
Treating signs of disease and preventing pest infestations is like giving a knight his armor. It protects against unseen dangers, ensuring the tree's continued reign as a healthy monarch of its domain.
Urban trees face their own battles—pollution, compacted soil, dead branches, and limited space for growth. It's like living in a cramped city apartment, challenging, but with smart adjustments, thriving is possible.
With proper care as well as attention, you can improve soil health, avoid common mistakes, and provide space for roots to stretch. These expert care tree maintenance tips not only enhance its environment but also foster resilience and growth.
A tree's health isn’t just about watering and pruning; it's an intricate dance between all these factors. Our professional arborist manages all these elements to ensure that these arboreal guardians continue to weave their magic in our landscapes, standing tall as testaments to endurance and beauty. Trees are complex organisms, and average tree ages depend on several factors, including their species, health, and environmental conditions. Here are some of the key factors that influence how long a common tree can live:
Trees come in an astounding array of species, each with its own unique lifespan. Some are like shooting stars in the forest, burning brightly and fading quickly, while others are ancient sentinels that endure through the ages. Consider the giant sequoias found in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. These colossal, ancient trees are renowned for their exceptional longevity, often living for over 3,000 years. Their enormous size and natural resilience have allowed them to withstand the test of time, making them one of the most iconic examples of long-lived tree species on the planet. When compared with some fruit trees which only live for 25 years, you can see that the average tree lifespan varies greatly.
Just as a healthy lifestyle contributes to human longevity, a tree's overall health plays a pivotal role in determining its lifespan. Proper tree care, including regular pruning, soil nutrient supplementation, and protection from diseases and pests, can significantly extend a tree's life. Take, for example, the remarkable bristlecone pines, one of the world's oldest and hardiest tree species. These ancient sentinels, found in the high-altitude, harsh environments of the woods in the western U.S., have thrived for thousands of years due to their unique adaptations and resilience.
Trees are remarkably adaptable organisms, capable of enduring a wide range of environmental factors. From the towering giant sequoias in California to the elegant palm trees swaying in tropical breezes, trees have found unique ways to thrive in diverse habitats, from warm to cold temperatures. Take the oak tree, for example. It grows well in adverse soil conditions, including sandy and loamy soils. However, even ancient giants have their limits. Extreme factors like severe droughts, floods, or extended periods of adverse weather conditions can take a toll on a tree's health and, in some cases, lead to shorter lifespans and premature demise.
Sadly, human activities, such as deforestation, pollution, and urban development, pose a grave threat to the longevity of trees worldwide. Evergreen trees, including the majestic pine trees that adorn many landscapes, are particularly vulnerable to these threats. Historical logging nearly pushed these mature trees to the brink of extinction in some regions. Fortunately, conservation efforts and the establishment of protected areas have helped safeguard these awe-inspiring trees. Recognizing the importance of preserving natural treasures is a crucial step in ensuring they continue to grace our planet for generations to come.

Edmonton is home to a stunning variety of trees, adding natural beauty and environmental benefits to the region. However, like all living organisms, trees can fall victim to diseases that threaten their health and vitality. Trusty Tree Services, based in Sherwood Park, is committed to the care and preservation of the city’s trees. As such, we want all homeowners to understand what their trees fight against. We will explore common tree diseases, how to identify them, and the best practices for prevention and treatment.
Before we delve into prevention and treatment, it's essential to understand the common tree diseases that can afflict trees in North America, but more specifically in Edmonton. These diseases can pose a significant threat to the health and vitality of the city's urban forest. Let's take a closer look at some of the prevalent tree diseases in the region:
This insidious fungal disease is a notorious enemy of Edmonton's elm trees. Dutch Elm Disease, often referred to as DED, has a devastating impact on these stately trees. It's caused by the fungus Ophiostoma, and its symptoms are nothing short of alarming. Infected elms start to show signs of wilting and yellowing leaves, which might initially be mistaken for the natural seasonal changes in the late summer months and fall. However, as the disease progresses, these once-vibrant trees quickly deteriorate, with leaves turning brown, curling, and eventually dropping off. DED is primarily transmitted by bark beetles, tiny insects that carry the fungus from the host tree to other trees. As these beetles feed on an infected tree, they become carriers, spreading the disease to healthy elms in the process.
Black Knot is another common tree disease that plagues Edmonton's urban landscape. This disease is not limited to a single tree species; instead, it affects various members of the Prunus family, including cherry and plum trees. Identifying Black Knot is relatively straightforward, as it appears as dark, elongated swellings on tree branches and twigs, giving them an unsightly and distorted appearance. Left unchecked, this disease can lead to branch dieback, poor growth, and reduced fruit production, making it a significant concern for orchard owners and homeowners alike.
Edmonton's apple and pear trees are particularly vulnerable to Fire Blight, a bacterial disease with a name that aptly captures its destructive nature. This disease, caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora, causes wilting, blackening, and a scorched appearance in affected trees, closely resembling the aftermath of a fire. It often starts with the wilting of blossoms in late spring, which then spreads to branches. The infected parts of the tree can develop a telltale "shepherd's crook" shape, further aiding in identification. Fire Blight is highly contagious and can be spread through rain, insects, or pruning tools, making it essential to address any outbreaks of this tree health risk swiftly.
Edmonton's pine species are not immune to tree diseases, with Needlecast being a common ailment in this region. Needlecast diseases affect these evergreen trees, causing browning and needle drop. As the disease progresses, it can lead to a weakened and unattractive appearance, leaving once-lush spruce trees looking sparse and unhealthy, causing needle blight. Proper diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to prevent the continued deterioration of these valuable trees.
Leaf spot diseases are a collective threat to a wide range of trees in Edmonton. These diseases manifest as small, dark spots on infected leaves, which may coalesce over time, reducing the tree's ability to photosynthesize and thrive. They are most common after moist weather in the spring, and while these diseases often don't lead to tree mortality directly, they can weaken trees over time, causing leaf blight and making them more susceptible to other stressors and types of injury. Identifying the specific type of leaf spot disease and implementing effective treatment can help mitigate their impact on your trees.
Understanding these common tree diseases in Edmonton is the first step in effective tree care and management. By recognizing the symptoms and signs associated with these diseases, you can take proactive measures to protect the trees that contribute to the natural beauty and ecological balance of the city.
The first step in effective tree disease management is the early identification of potential issues. Trees, like any living organism, can communicate their distress through various symptoms and signs. By being vigilant and observant, you can catch tree diseases in their early stages, which significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and the overall health of your trees. Here are some critical signs to look out for:
In addition to these visual cues, it's essential to pay attention to changes in your susceptible tree's overall appearance and behaviour. Are branches becoming sparse? Is the tree's growth stunted? Are there signs of pest infestations, like holes in the bark or chewed leaves? All these signs, when noticed early, can provide valuable information for effective tree disease management.
Regular tree inspections and proactive monitoring can go a long way in preserving the health and beauty of your trees. If you suspect a problem, it's always a good idea to seek the expertise of professional arborists, such as those at Trusty Tree Services in Edmonton. Our tree care services can accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the most appropriate course of action to protect your mature trees.
Preventing tree diseases is a proactive and cost-effective approach to maintaining the health and longevity of your trees. The old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," certainly holds true when it comes to tree care. Here are some essential strategies to protect your trees from common diseases:
Incorporating these preventative measures into your tree care routine can go a long way in maintaining the health of your trees and the overall beauty of your landscape. Remember that professional arborists, like those at Trusty Tree Services, can provide expert guidance and services to ensure your trees receive the best care possible. By being proactive and taking steps to prevent disease, you can enjoy the benefits of a vibrant and thriving urban forest in Edmonton.
In cases where tree diseases have already taken hold, it's essential to take swift and appropriate action to mitigate the severe damage and prevent further spread. The following are critical steps to consider when dealing with established tree diseases:
Depending on the specific disease and its severity, the application of fungicides or antibiotics may be necessary to control the infection. These chemical treatments can help slow the progression of the disease and protect healthy parts of the tree. However, it's essential to use these treatments judiciously and in accordance with local regulations. Consulting with a professional arborist is crucial to determine the most effective treatment and application methods.
When dealing with tree diseases, especially if you are unsure of the specific disease and the appropriate treatment, it's advisable to seek the expertise of professional arborists. Trusty Tree Services in Edmonton is an excellent resource for professional tree care and disease management. All while ensuring your mature tree removal is done safely and efficiently.
In a world that's constantly evolving, trees stand as ancient sentinels, silently witnessing the passage of time. These majestic beings often outlive generations of humans, but just like us, they too undergo the inevitable process of aging. In this blog, we'll delve deep into the signs of an aging tree, and the thoughtful and sometimes necessary steps we must take to remove mature trees. It's a story of life, aging, and responsible stewardship of the environment. Consider these top 5 biggest factors:
The journey of an aging tree begins with its bark. As a tree grows older, its once-smooth, vibrant bark becomes rough, furrowed, and weathered. These changes are akin to the wrinkles and lines that appear on our skin as we age. This transformation not only adds character to the tree but also indicates its age.
One of the most evident signs of aging in trees is the gradual thinning of their canopy. As trees age, their branches may become weaker and more prone to breaking. This leads to a noticeable reduction in foliage, leaving gaps in the once-dense canopy. In some cases, this may lead to the tree becoming more susceptible to disease or pests.
Young healthy trees thrive on rapid growth, pushing upwards with vigor and increasing in diameter. However, as a tree ages, its growth rate slows significantly. You might notice that an older tree seems to have reached a height plateau. This slow growth is a telltale sign of the tree's aging process.
Aging trees often bear the weight of their years in the form of dead or hollow limbs. These limbs, which were once vibrant and full of life, may become weak, brittle, and lifeless. Larger branches that are hollow are particularly concerning, as they can pose a safety hazard and increase the risk of branches falling and the possibility of a dead tree.
Just as our immune systems weaken with age, they become more vulnerable to diseases and pests as they grow older, causing them to become sick trees. This is a natural part of the aging process, and it often requires more intensive care and maintenance to keep the tree healthy. Diseased trees can also pose a risk to nearby trees as some species and pests spread fast. When tree roots are infested, a professional will need to deal with the entire system from branches to roots and soil to stop the spread.
There are other times when mature tree removal is necessary. From dead branches or weak branches that pose a risk, or when a storm has irreparable damage and you need emergency tree removal. Snow or lightning can be equally damaging from the trunk to the mighty branches. The proper equipment becomes essential to deal with your mature tree removal to ensure the safety of the surrounding environment and all those around it. Read on to learn more about how we approach this process.
The aging process of trees mirrors the journey of human life, with its own set of signs and challenges. Just as we care for our elderly loved ones, we must also care for aging trees. Read on to see how our team of experts assesses and determines the best approach for mature tree removal in Edmonton.
When it becomes evident that a mature tree needs to be removed, the process begins with a careful assessment. Our certified arborist typically evaluates the tree's health, its potential risks, and the overall direct impact on the surrounding landscape. As a general rule of thumb, we consider whether there are alternatives to removal, such as structural pruning or cabling.
Responsible removal involves understanding and adhering to local regulations and environmental impact considerations. In many places, the removal of a certain type of tree species may be heavily regulated to protect the local ecosystem. We take extra care to obtain the necessary permits and follow best practices for minimizing environmental impact.
The removal process itself requires the use of specialized tools and techniques. The experienced arborists and tree removal experts from our team will employ various methods, such as climbing and dismantling, stump grinding, pole saws, or using a crane for larger tree trunks. The choice of method depends on the tree size, location, appearance, or surrounding environment.
Safety is paramount during tree removal. Our professionals follow strict safety guidelines for every project, including wearing appropriate safety equipment and establishing safety zones to protect both the workers and bystanders. The process often involves careful planning to avoid damaging nearby structures.
Responsible, mature tree removal doesn't end with its removal. It also involves additional factors such as proper disposal and, ideally, recycling of the wood and tree stumps. Wood from removed trees can be repurposed into lumber, firewood, wood chips, or mulch, contributing to sustainability and reducing waste.
After the tree is removed, it's crucial to address the impact on the landscape. This may involve planting new trees or shrubs, laying grass seed, filling in the void left by the removed tree, and restoring the aesthetic balance of the environment. We work with you and determine the best approach to rehabilitate the space.
Responsible tree removal is not merely an act of extraction; it's a careful, thoughtful process that considers the tree's impact on the environment and the safety of the people around it.
By understanding the signs of an aging tree and the art of responsible removal, we can better appreciate the profound role trees play in our world. They are not just silent witnesses to time but living entities that deserve our respect and consideration throughout their lifecycles.

Among the hustle and bustle of fast-paced lives, we often overlook the silent giants that grace our surroundings—trees. Their beauty is an artistry painted by nature, and their presence provides a sense of serenity that's both calming and refreshing. Trees, with their lush canopies and changing foliage, are the guardians of our environment in this Canadian northern climate. They offer shelter to countless creatures, purify the air we breathe, and stand tall as reminders of the delicate balance of our ecosystem. But to ensure these arboreal wonders thrive and continue to enhance our world, we must recognize the importance of our Edmonton arborist, especially when it comes to our cold climates.
As the seasons change and winter's chill approaches, the need for proper tree care and protective barriers becomes paramount. At Trusty Tree Services, our team of dedicated arborists specializes in the art of winterizing trees during the dormant winter season. With the knowledge and experience to protect them from harsh elements and cold damage, we ensure they not only survive the winter but flourish come spring, protecting nature's wonders from potential damage. From expert pruning to prevent snow and ice damage to deep root fertilization to strengthen their defenses, we are the trusted partners you need to safeguard your arboreal companions. Don't wait until the cold snap and first snowfall, let's ensure your trees' health and vitality through the winter months.
Winter's arrival transforms our world into a serene, snow-covered wonderland. It's a season when our trees stand resilient, bracing themselves against the bitter cold and the weight of snow and ice. Just as we prepare our homes for the colder months, it's crucial to ensure that our arboreal companions are ready for the challenges of winter. Join us as we delve into the intricate art of winterizing trees and understand the importance of why wrapping trees for winter is an essential practice to protect and preserve these magnificent beings.
To appreciate the significance of winterizing trees, one must first grasp the perils they face during the cold season. The weight of snow as well as ice can exert tremendous pressure on tree branches, leading to damaged branches or even breakage. The freezing temperatures in Edmonton can desiccate leaves and delicate branches, weakening their overall health. Furthermore, the soil's moisture tends to freeze, making it difficult to access essential nutrients and water, leaving them vulnerable to dehydration. Read on to explore the top 5 steps needed for winterizing trees during our cold Canadian winters.
The first step in the winterization process is proper pruning. Trees should be pruned during the fall to remove any dead, diseased, or weakened branches. This not only prevents potential hazards during winter storms but also allows them to allocate their energy more effectively, focusing on maintaining their core structure and health.
Another vital aspect of winterizing trees is deep-root fertilization. This process involves injecting essential nutrients directly into the soil surrounding the entire tree root system. This ensures that even once frost hits, they have access to the nutrients they need to survive and promote root growth. The added benefit is that when they are well-nourished, they are more resilient to cold weather stress and are more likely to thrive once the climate changes and spring arrives.
Tree wrapping is a crucial step in safeguarding any type of tree from snow cover and winter damage. Wrapping the tree trunk with a specialized wrap provides insulation, shielding the bark from extreme temperature fluctuations and adding that extra insulation protection in our harsh climate and cold temperatures. This layer of extra protection is essential also to deter pests and rodents that might otherwise cause damage during the winter months.
Adding a layer of mulch surrounding the tree's base is another essential practice to protect them in winter weather. Several inches of mulch around the tree base act as a natural insulator, helping to prevent frozen soil and regulating the soil temperature as well as moisture levels to prevent severe damage at the base. This simple but effective technique can make a significant difference in its ability to endure harsh, cold winter conditions.
During winter, animals, pests, and diseases might still pose a threat. Proper management measures should be part of your winterization plan to prevent not only disease and insect damage but animal damage as well. Our experienced arborist can identify potential issues and provide the necessary treatments to protect them from infestations that can weaken tree cells during the winter months.
Wrapping a tree for winter stands as a symbol of resilience and strength. Its branches, laden with snow, glisten in the winter sun, casting a serene and picturesque scene. While we often associate trees with the vibrant colors of spring, the cool shade of summer, and the leaves’ beauty in the fall, prepping a tree for winter offers a unique form of beauty. You can prepare almost any type for winter, from deciduous trees, evergreen trees, or fruit trees to ornamental trees.
There is something inherently inspiring about a hardy tree that endures the harshest of conditions, emerging unscathed and ready to burst forth with life when spring returns. It's a reminder of the enduring beauty of nature and its remarkable ability to adapt, evolve, and thrive.
It becomes evident that this process is not just a means of protection but also an act of respect and appreciation for the trees that grace our lives. Prepping your tree for winter is a testament to our commitment to preserving the natural world and ensuring the enduring beauty of our surroundings. Tailoring your approach to the specific tree types in your landscape or the weather in your area ensures their health and vitality through the freezing wind, heavy snow, and colder months.
When you invest in the winter health of your trees, you invest in a greener, more vibrant future for yourself and generations to come. As winter approaches, embrace the art of winterizing trees and let these magnificent beings continue to inspire and beautify our world. Read on to see how we can make the difference that protects these gems for generations to come.

Very efficient staff. The work was completed as expected and to our satisfaction. The clean-up was also very good.
We have engaged Trusty Tree to carry out a long-term plan to rehab and maintain our extensive tree inventory on our 6 acre site. They did a great mapping of all the trees using Google Maps, and proposed priorities. The first stage was completed yesterday - Keegan and Adrian did a 30 minute Q&A with interested owners first, and did a great job of explaining and giving some hints on things we could to. The pruning was well done, and they cleaned up carefully - we are pleased with the work. They had a great idea for how we could take advantage of the resulting mulch to rehab some areas that needed amendment under conifer trees. We are looking forward to moving ahead with that. So kudos to Keegan and Adrian.
Very pleased with the service from start to finish...from talking to Sarah at the onset who was very knowledgeable and pleasant to the quick efficient pleasant service by the 2 man crew..reasonable and fair pricing..thank you..will gladly recommend
I contacted 5 different tree removal companies, 1 did not get back to me and the other 3 were almost double in price. Kolton contacted me almost immediately after inquiring online, gave me a fair and honest quote, snuck me in right away and did an unbelievable job. I would highly recommend trusty tree! Save your self time and energy and go straight to these guy.
Wow! Both Chelsey and Jared were very helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and thorough. They were also very tolerant in answering all my questions. 🙂 All the work was completed on time and at a very reasonable price. Also, zero collateral damage from the removal of some pretty big and awkwardly located trees. Great job. I’ll be recommending you to my neighbors and colleagues 👍
Jared, Sarah, and Chelsea were extremely knowledgeable, professional, and hardworking, with an obvious love of trees, an amazing attention to detail, and an outstanding work ethic and desire to do the best job of pruning each tree, checking and double checking their work. Very friendly and personable, willing to share expertise and worked their butts off non-stop. Cleaned up thoroughly and left the yard like they’d never even been there. I highly recommend Sarah, who gave us a fair quote, and Jared and Chelsea, who thoroughly, quickly, and expertly completed the work!
Just had Keegan and Jared take down two trees in front of our house. They were very professional and did an amazing job. 10/10 would hire again.
I had a huge tree that split in half. The guys worked ALL day in 33 degree weather and never complained once!! They all were really nice guys!!
We are totally impressed with Trusty Tree from a business and professional perspective. We were in awe watching Matt and Keegan working hard and diligently (in the heat!) while keeping safe climbing in and removing our big tree! We highly recommend this company!
We had Keegan & Matt from Trusty Tree come and remove a couple of dead aspens and trim a maple for us. I was very impressed with safe handling of the work, friendly manner, and great cleanup of the space afterward. They were happy to answer all of my questions, and worked really hard on a very hot day. Thank you!
I needed their help as my tree seems to be sick and requiring some TLC. They came to check the tree and gave me suggestions on how to take care of it. Very honest business and very professinal staff. They are not only after your money. I will definitely sign up with their services in the future if my tree doesn’t get healthier. Thank you!
Had a spruce taken down by trusty trees, they were able to get me scheduled asap and took it down within 20 mins! Cleaning it all up too. Thank you to Sarah and the team for everything!
Excellent work by Keegan and Shay - tree removal went smoothly, they cleaned up well and were very friendly along the way
Excellent price, excellent service. Keegan was dispatched to our condo complex to trim some trees and remove others. Keegan and his partner were very knowledgeable, kind and patient. He made sure that I was happy with the trimming that was done and provided information regarding sick trees we found (aphid infestation) and what steps to take to get the tree healthy again. It was discovered that more work was required that was not on the original contract. Keegan was very patient, contacted his office for permission to do the ad-hoc work with no complaints. Keegan is a keeper for sure!
Highly recommend. We had an excellent experience with the crew from Trusty Tree…..they were efficient, professional and friendly. They even threw the frisbee for our dog !
We have used Trusty Tree a few times and are always happy with the service! Sarah came by to assess and give us an estimate, all reasonably priced, and Adrian and Keegan took great care of our yard... thanks a bunch!
Very efficient, safe and effective work. Met on site for the quote, then promptly came and completed the work a few days later.
They were absolutely wonderful! The arborist Sarah was friendly and professional, and showed up when she said she would. The three gentleman who came to cut down the trees were so efficient and knowledgeable. They had 4 trees down and cleaned up within an hour. We would recommend Trusty Tree Service to anyone!
Highly recommend Trusty Tree Services. Outstanding service! Kolton is extremely professional, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful with the advice he gave. Thank you! Will definitely use them again in the future!
I was very impressed with the service provided by Trusty Tree Service. The arborist did an excellent job balancing the tree with pruning and clearing out congested areas. He provided advice about tree care and his assistant cleared and disposed of the branches cut by putting them in the chipper. I strongly recommend this company.
We have used Trusty Tree services in the past and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with our arbor needs. Sarah (one of their arborists) gave us great recommendations and a fair quote and then Keegan & Shay did a fantastic job felling our diseased columnar poplars and cleaning up after themselves. You couldn’t tell they had even been here it was left so tidy and clean. Thanks so much!
The 2 man crew was awesome, yard was cleaned up afterwards and you couldn’t tell 2 large trees were taken down, will have them back soon, highly recommend this company
I have used Trust Tree Services a number of times and there work is excellent. The staff are very personable and I really appreciate how the work area is left spotless once finished. I wouldn't use anyone else!

Trusty Tree came highly recommended so I took a chance and called. In no time at all I had a quote, all questions answered, and the work was done quicker than I thought it would be. Mike, Keegan, and Shay were professional, friendly, and very hard working making the whole experience 'groovy' ;)
We needed a spruce tree trimmed back. Trusty tree was very easy to work with scheduling and planning. Jared and Keegan came and did an amazing job. Great to work with and very personable.
What a fantastic crew!!! Sarah & Shane came and trimmed my rather large tree. Such a professional, knowledgeable, caring, capable and courteous crew. Very well done from beginning to end. They did a fabulous job!
Trusty Trees did their magic at my Mothers house in Fort Saskatchewan. Mikex2 we’re on time, organized and knew their business. Gave the trees a good haircut as they had a lot of dead areas. Very pleased with their service, would definitely recommend them! Much thanks Mike and Mike.
We had a crew from Trusty tree services to come and remove 6, 40 foot aspen trees. They did an awesome job. They were very knowledgeable and very considerate of our property and our neighbours property. They had our yard and neighbours yards totally cleaned up when they were finished. I would highly recommend Trusty Tree Services
We had a crew from Trusty Tree Services trim three trees on our property a few weeks ago, sorry for the late review. Couldn't be happier with the whole process. From the estimate to the final clean up, everything went very well. I contacted other companies for estimates, didn't even get a call back. Thanks again Trusty Tree for a great job!
Trusty Tree Services came out and pruned our Amur Cherry tree in Fort Saskatchewan and did a great job. The technicians were knowledgeable and gave me tips on how to better take care of our tree. The technicians were friendly and polite and cleaned up before they left. I would definitely recommend Trusty Tree Service!
Excellent job! I highly recommend this company. I will be calling again this fall! I am very happy.
We had an amazing experience with Trusty Tree. They gave a prompt estimate for some very difficult trees in our campground. They arrived on time and began work immediately. Their expertise shone through as they brought down the trees on point! Friendly, informative, professional and outstanding workmanship. I would recommend them in a heartbeat. Shout out to Colton, Joe and Adrian - great work!
We had Trusty Tree out this year to shape and thin 4 trees and 3 Mugo Pine shrubs. I was impressed with a quick appt for the quote and then quick response for booking. Our trees were pruned earlier in the season as this was the recommended timeframe, and the Mugo Pine shrubs pruned later in the spring after the new growth appeared. I'm pleased with the crew that came out, they were polite, professional and experienced. We are happy with how our trees and shrubs look and feel the price was fair. We would definitely recommend Trusty Tree and will have them back in the future. Thanks for taking extra time with us to talk about proper pruning too!
Very professional and courteous crew. Difficult tree to cut down with bucket truck given clearances.
I am a new widow and my yard work is so overwhelming, I called Trusty tree to come over and give me a quote. Because my husband who has slways been in love with taking great care of our home, has passed I am here to do it alone.Trusty tree are the most professional people I dealt with..And they actually had the most professional quote, they took pictures of my Tree to elaborate on what needed to be done, and explained why everything had to be done in a certain way...after 3 other companies coming out I realized that Trusty Trees quote was extremely fair. So when the Trusty Tree crew arrived to prune my beloved tree, they were ready, and really understood the sentimental value of my tree that my late husband and I used to sit under every night. The crew members Joe and Shane collaborated beautifully brought down the required amount of my tree..They had a fantastic chipper on site and they also cleaned up the yard so beautifully after the cutting was done...If anyone reads this review, please understand how much that tree meant to me and my late husband. Joe and Shane gave it a loving and caring trim, and they where not only hard working but very informative of the process, and very just great guys, they included their sense of humor to make the trimming process easier on me. THEY were so compasionate and understanding . I thank them for that..... If you are thinking of pruning your gorgeous beloved tree, Trusty Tree has got be your only choice. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!! My name is Christine and if anyone wants to contact me about what a great job this crew did..please do!!!
I highly recommend Trusty Tree Services! From start to finish everything was handled promptly, professionally and courteously! They are very knowledgeable and efficient. I really liked how they explained things. We will definitely have them back for some fall work. Thanks to everyone!
